Successful Crime Victims' Week Event
As part of National Crime Victims’ Right Week, NCVLI facilitated a free presentation entitled, “Internet Perils: Cyberstalking, Cyberfraud, and Child Abuse Imagery.” The presentation featured a panel of leading crime victims’ rights practitioners discussing the emerging issue of social media and Internet victimization, and some of the unique hurdles currently facing these victims.
Fighting for Victim Privacy & Protection: When Changing Your Name is Not Enough
An Oregon attorney contacted NCVLI for assistance protecting a victim of domestic violence and stalking who, in fear of her life, is trying to change her identity. Oregon law (and practice) are that there be public notice of the application for name change, seemingly without exception. To fail to protect this victim and others like her places the victim at risk of physical harm, effectively renders her name change meaningless, and works an injustice that flies in the face of sound public policy. Securing Restitution for a Victim of Human Trafficking
NCVLI is working with a South Carolina attorney who represents a victim of trafficking. The victim was severely burned at the work site where he was forced to work, and was then kidnapped from the hospital and held against his will in the home of the trafficker. While the victim has recovered some monies through worker’s compensation, he is seeking restitution from the defendant for additional loss suffered as a result of the kidnapping. Defendant argues that the loss is not compensable because he was only charged with harboring an illegal alien and not trafficking or kidnapping. NCVLI
