Attend a practical continuing legal education course on August 3rd at the University of Baltimore on how to use Maryland’s crime victims’ rights laws to protect your client. The full-day program, focused on protections in the criminal case, will be taught by the country’s leading experts from the National Crime Victim Law Institute (NCVLI) and it’s partners. Presenters include Meg Garvin, Executive Director of NCVLI & Clinical Professor of Law and Russell Butler, Executive Director of the Maryland Crime Victims’ Resource Center.

This full-day program, developed for lawyers, advocates, law students, and allied professionals will provide an overview of crime victims’ rights law, guide you through the basic steps involved in representing crime victims in criminal cases, and teach the “how to’s” of asserting crime victims’ rights in Maryland state courts. The training will focus primarily on pretrial practice by highlighting commonly occurring issues that may require motion practice and discussing ways to litigate those issues.  It will also address ethical problems that may arise when representing crime victims and provide an overview of some events during trial and post-conviction stages that may implicate victims’ rights. 

Whether you know nothing about victims’ rights or you already have some experience, this training will provide you with the tools to become an effective advocate for Maryland crime victims. Access to justice requires competent legal advocacy, and yet too often victims of crime do not receive the legal representation that they need to protect their rights. You can help!
